7 Signs Your Business Outgrew Its One IT Person

By the CTEKS team · October 15, 2026 · 2 min read

Many businesses start with one trusted IT person, whether an employee, a consultant or the office tech-savvy colleague. That works until the business grows. These are common signs it is time for more support.

1. Everything depends on one person

If a vacation, illness or resignation would stop IT, the business has a single point of failure. Documentation and a backup person fix this.

2. Problems are fixed but keep coming back

Constant firefighting leaves no time to prevent issues. Monitoring and scheduled maintenance reduce repeat problems.

3. Security is falling behind

Multi-factor authentication, endpoint protection, email security and training take dedicated attention. If they are only partly in place, risk is higher than it looks.

4. Nobody has tested the backups

If you cannot say when a backup was last restored, you cannot be sure it works.

5. Technology is aging without a plan

Old servers, out-of-support software and surprise replacements mean no one has time for planning.

6. New hires wait for equipment or access

Slow onboarding and offboarding wastes time and can leave old accounts open.

7. Customers ask about security and you scramble

Security questionnaires are becoming routine. Documented controls make them easier to answer.

What to do next

Many companies keep their IT person and add a managed provider for monitoring, security, after-hours coverage and projects. That gives the in-house person backup and the business a safety net. Learn how managed services work.
